The Institute for Excellence (IFE) offers college-bound students in 7 participating counties the unique opportunity to earn college credit and engage in college-level coursework before enrolling in college.
This hybrid program offers a virtual and in-person component, exposing students to diverse post-secondary academic pathways and provides hands-on research experience with faculty from various fields. Partnering with various colleges at Mason, IFE equips students with dynamic learning opportunities, enabling them to explore their interests and pursue their academic and career goals at Mason, Virginia's largest public research university.

Eligibility for participation
- Students must be rising 11th or 12th graders
- Be a participant in the following school districts: Alexandria City, Arlington County, Falls Church City, Fairfax County, Manassas City, Manassas Park City, and Prince William County.
- 3.0 Grade point average (cumulative)
- At least a “B” average in science and math coursework
- Have taken or be enrolled in Algebra 2 at the time of application
